Shanky Radics
Wednesday, 25 April 2007

Born Kevin Were, ‘Shanky Radics’ started music at a tender age of 11 years, whilst in Primary School. He is now 26. His passion for music and stage performance got stronger at Secondary School. He frequented popular musical joints such as Florida, Kengeles, Zig Zag and Club New York to take part in the many competitions these Clubs organised.

In 1998 and 1999, when Musical Battles were booming at Florida Club, he battled it out with the other Emcees and walked home with the most coveted prize of ‘Best Dancehall Artiste’. This was no mean achievement, it was what Shanky was yearning for to kick start his musical career. Now he was scouting for better pastures and good promoters to get him on the music scene.

It was not until the year 2000, that he teamed up with the likes of Redsan, Lyrical Erico and Kidush; the four formed a group called ‘2 Moja’. The group recorded some cool DanceHall ‘Hits’, ‘Mabeste’, ‘Cha ka Cha’, ‘Amanda’, and ‘Omuhana’.The songs were recorded at the then famous Sync Sounds, of Ex- Mombasa Roots Musicians and one of the finest solo guitarist Kenya has seen to date, ‘Emile’, aka Ahmed Juma, now deceased. Sync Sounds Studio were also behind some great pioneers of Afro Fusion, Dancehall and Hip Hop Artistes such as ‘Hardstone’, ‘Kalamashaka’ and ‘Shades O Black’.

Shanky performed with this group for two years and later parted ways . He later joined forces with Uganda’s Celebrity Superstar, Jose Chameleon and Shanks Vivi Die and did a collaboration ‘Hit’.

In April 2004 he curtain raised for Jamaica Dancehall, Guru, the one and only, ‘Superstar’, Sean Paul. In November of the same year he performed with the Group, T.O.K.

Later in collaboration with ‘Bombshell’, they released one of the biggest Dancehall Hits, ‘Bambika’ featuring ‘Tyrical and Lyrical Erico’. This track was ‘Mega’; it outshone all that was around enjoying massive Air Play on Radio and TV, where the Video became an Anthem across East and Central Africa. The album is due out anytime and will include hits, ‘Bambika’, ‘Shake It’; ‘Mama Africa’, ‘Kuro’, ‘My Love’, ‘Hot Gals’, and lots of other surprise tracks that will keep you yearning for more.

He always recalls his early inspiration into Music, by Stars like Bob Marley, Beenie Man, Micheal Jackson and Sean Paul to name a few.

Currently enjoying great success in concert appearances and Air Play, Shanky’s lifelong dream is to take African Dancehall Music to greater heights than it is now, to establish the sounds on the International Market and like the many African artistes, specially Kenyan African Artistes who are loaded with talent, its only the link to international promoters and production houses and Music Gurus like American Idols, Simon Cowell and Randy Jackson is what they are lacking.

In the last ten years Kenya has seen the largest influx of young Talent in every form or shape, and most of them are daring enough to venture across the continents to see that dream of Super Stardom that other African Superstars like ‘Akon’ have achieved.

To his many fans, “You are the Best”, and to fellow Artistes, “We can make it if we really try”. “Yes You Can” I will add.

Shanky Radics aka Kevin Were the young 11 year old that saw the dream of reaching the Stars is on Track!!!!
