Many people always wonder what’s up with Stage personalities and their names, take for instance, Nameless aka David Mathenge, or Redsan aka Swabir Mohammed. Well its as simple as ‘ABC’, a stage name is very important, it personalises an Artistes and gives him a Trade Mark, hence the right stage name is always very important. Many Superstars have adopted a host of Stage names and others have dropped one or two of their names and stuck with what they feel will do the trick, e.g. Robert Nesta Marley, Bob Marley, well Jerry Jo, born Jerry Malaki is no exception and you will all agree with me that Jerry Jo sounds good.
Born on the 18th of September, some 25 years ago, Jerry Jo has a diverse style that could often pass as Dancehall. A keen sportsman who enjoys, as and when time permits, a good game of Basketball, was in the limelight much earlier than his Musical days. During his school days at Shimo la Tewa Secondary School, on the outskirts of Mombasa, he was named ‘Most valuable Basket Ball player’. Though his interest in Music and performance dates back to his early schooling days, it was not until 2002, after competing in the popular Safaricom Star Search, that he got inspired, performing under the name ‘Katskills’. This dynamic performer who is sheer class to watch whilst performing came out top of the pack; he won the event without dispute and was offered a recording deal for a compilation Album sponsored by ‘Action for Music Kenya’. Jerry is one of the few Kenyan Artistes that has successfully produced quality Video Clips and Recordings. His clip for the Track, ‘Sakata’, has done very well on MTV Base video rotation and has top of the play list both in the Dance Hall and On Air. Jerry’s stage presence is unique; he has the qualities of any great entertainer and uses his physique and personality to its fullest on stage. Currently his Music is enjoying fantastic ‘Air Play’, both in the Kenyan Air Waves and on South African ‘Channel O’ T.V. Station. He strongly believes that creating good music is doing stuff that relates to our everyday lives, regardless of its nature. This I personally agree with Jerry as I recall the success of Congolese Musicians who raided Kenya in the mid- seventies. The likes of Fataki los los Lokassa Masumbuko ya Dunia, Jojo Ikomo, Baba Ilunga wa Ilunga and Samba Mapangala, sang reality songs relating to our everyday lives and took Kenya by storm. Jerry Jo is a regular in Shows and Concerts around the country, and in neighbouring states of Uganda, Tanzania, and Rwanda and across the waters in Dubai. He has plans to tour the rest of the world and share this ‘God given talent’ with other diverse communities. He was Nominated, ‘Best Male Artiste’, at the Kisima Awards, Kenya and has strong ambitions to be one of Africa’s Best Male Artiste, to face Celebes such as Idibia. Currently in the process of finalising the nitty gritty of his debut album, ‘Vunja Mifupa’, that features singles, ‘Sakata’, ‘Bottom Sharper’, ‘Mariamu’, ‘Wanadada’, ‘Hustle’, ‘Keep it Dancing’ and much more. He has worked with the best in the land, Ogopa DeeJay’s and Blue Zebra Studios. Jerry Jo aka Jerry Malaki, has achieved success through hard work, creativity, dedication and the inspiration to understand the local music industry. As a celebrity life is not a bed of roses, one has to put in a lot of effort and have a lot of patience to succeed, Jerry has it all, and we look forward to this dynamic Artiste reach for the skies.
