Lake Nakuru National Park 188 sq km This paradise lake, so colorful, so beautiful is located some 140km north-west of Nairobi, in Nakuru District of the Rift Valley Province. Lake Nakuru was gazetted as a bird sanctuary in 1960 and later to National Park in 1968. A northern extension was added in 1974 and the lake was designated as a Ramsar site in 1990. The foundation of the parks food chains is the cyanophyte spirulina platensis which can support huge numbers of lesser flamingo.Lake Nakuru is a shallow strongly alkaline lake, about 62 sq. km. It is set in a picturesque landscape of surrounding woodland and grassland next to Nakuru town, once dubbed the cleanest town in Kenya. The landscape of marsh and grasslands alternating with rocky cliffs, stretches of acacia woodland and rocky hillsides covered with a Euphorbia forest on its eastern borders. The lake catchment is bounded by Menengai crater to the north, the Bahati hills to the north east, the lion hill ranges to the east, Eburu crater to the south and the Mau escarpment to the west. Three major rivers, the Njoro, Makalia and Enderit drain into the lake, together with treated water from the town's sewage works. The Menengai crater is an ideal expedition outing for schools and colleges. The lake has unique vegetation of about 550 different plant species including the unique and biggest euphorbia forest in Africa, picturesque landscape and yellow acacia woodlands and beautiful Makalia Waterfalls. The normally water covered surface of the lake occupies about a third of the park. The lake water supports a dense bloom of the blue-green Cyanophyte Spirulina platensis from which it derives its beautiful color and is the major food source for the flamingo and is fringed by alkaline swamps with areas of sedge, Cyprus laevigatus and typha marsh along the river. inflows and springs. Famous for the Flamingo, which serves a crescent for the main Town in the Rift Valley, Nakuru, and a variety of terrestrial birds close to 450 species. Elgon, on the Kenya/Uganda border is a volcanic mountain, formed when the earth’s crust erupted, creating the Great Rift Valley. The National park is one of Kenya’s most beautiful, still wild and intact, with vast areas of untouched forest. The Park is home to an estimated 400 elephants, buffalo, leopard, the protected colobus and blue monkeys, and various types of antelope. Huge Elgon Teak and cedar trees, some over 80ft. tall dominate the forest scenery. There are close to 240 Bird species. A major attraction are the four caves, Kitum, Makingeni, Chepnyalil and Ngwarisha, Kitum is the largest, extending horizontally for 200m into the heart of the mountain. Kitum in Maasai, means “Place of Ceremonies”.These caves are popular gathering places for elephants. Every night long convoys venture deep into the caves to feed off the salt rich deposits. This nightly phenomenon has earned them the title “cave elephants”. Mt. Elgon also offers excellent climbing and walking opportunities. Tsavo West National Park 9,065sq km This beautiful historic Game Park is popular the world over. I was lucky to have frequented the park since a child and Tsavo always seems to fascinate me with surprises.Famous of its notorious Man Eaters of Tsavo in the 1900s, man-eating lions preyed on the railway workers building the great Kenya-Uganda Railway in 1900. Still evident of those traumatic times for the many coolies (workers) who were building the line, on display at the Railways Museum, Nairobi, is one of the carriages that a traveller was mauled and pulled away by the man-eaters. The park is easily accessible, located off the main Nairobi-Mombasa road. Its plains border with Tanzania another great destination for Game. It is an ideal park for walkers, offering a number of nature trails and the opportunity to explore the Chaimu volcanic crater. The park is spread with diverse habitats ranging from mountains, river forest, plains, lakes and wooded grassland. Leopard, cheetah, buffalo, elephant, giraffe, black rhino, lesser kudu, waterbuck, impala, zebra, lion are the game that can be found here and also crocodile and other small mammals .Bird lovers are in for a treat as there are always new species in Tsavo. One of the most conspicuous is the white-headed buffalo weaver, brownish-black and white with a vivid red rump when it flies. Starlings are in plenty .the rare duller Fischer's starling, and hornbills are also prevalent. The park has a hot and dry climate with fabulous features. One of the star features at the park is the Mzima Springs, beautiful cool, clear natural spring waters with underwater viewing hides for observing hippos, Lake Jipe. The park has three lodges with a bed capacity of 276 beds, public camp sites and four tented lodges with a bed capacity of 154. Tsavo East National Park 11.747 sq km Undisputedly the largest National Park, covering almost 40% of the total area of National parks in Kenya. It is one of the oldest parks and with its beautiful landscape and proximity to the coast has made it a popular tourist destination. Its bushy grassland and open plains alternate with semi-arid acacia scrubs and woodlands. Green swathes that cross the park give rise to lush vegetation at the river banks. Some of the spectacular views at the Tsavo East are Mudanda Rock and the Yatta Plateau, the world’s largest lava flow. And the Lugard Falls on the Galana River are eye catchers for photographers. Home to some of the largest herds in Kenya, the elephants glow red after dust baths, blowing the vivid red dust through their trunks over their bodies others includes rhino, lion, leopard, crocodile, waterbuck, kudu, gerenuk and zebra and Hunter’s Hartebeest with lyre-shaped horns. Close to 500 bird species are known to frequent this area including the ostrich and some migratory kestrels, buzzards stop at Tsavo-East during their long flight southThe park is hot and dry and has 16 airstrips and houses one lodge of 104 beds, four tented camps with 92 beds including 11 camp sites and a self catering Banda (cottage). Nairobi National Park 117 sq km We had a couple of hours to spare on Sunday, so we popped into the park, and saw a leopard, a rhino and a giraffe giving birth. .This is Kenya’s oldest animal sanctuary. Spread on 117 sq. kms of savannah set against the beautiful skyline of Nairobi, the cosmopolitan capital city of Kenya, thus making it the only city in the world which neighbours a natural game protection area, harbouring over 100 species of mammals. Although Nairobi National Park is a seasonal park, most of the game, such as lion, leopard, cheetah, impala, , Thomson's and Grant gazelle, Maasai giraffe, hippo and buffalo, including the indigenous Black Rhino, live in the protection of the park all year round. Herds of plains zebra, wildebeest and eland enter the park during the great migration in July and August to enjoy the rich grazing until the next rains come. The Park is also an ideal starting point for ornithological safaris, with over 400 species of birdlife. Most birds in this park depend on year seasons. Game birds include helmeted guinea-fowl, yellow-necked spur fowl, and Shelley’s (greywing) to name a few. The grasslands birds include; red-napped widow-bird and the Jackson's widow bird .Birds of prey include; secretary bird, martial, crowned, tawny and bateleur eagles. Vultures, buzzards (augur buzzard) and hawks are also present. Nairobi National Park was Kenya’s first ever National Park and celebrated its golden anniversary in 1996/97. It captured world headlines in 1989 when former President Daniel Moi torched ten tons of Ivory worth sixty million Kenya shillings in a fight against the mass slaughter of the African elephant for their tusks .The main park gate bears a commemorative plaque with the legendary words “Great objectives often require great sacrifices. The park has no accommodation facilities but plenty is available on prior booking in the City of Nairobi. Sibiloi National Park 1,570 sq kmThis is one of the world’s greatest treasures, the proof of man’s origins was found at Sibiloi National Park. The park was initially set up to protect these unique prehistoric and archaeological sites by the National Museum of Kenya. Dr. Richard Leakey led an expedition to this remote area of Kenya that borders Ethiopia, and discovered some of the earliest hominid traces at Koobi Fora. In the 1960’s these are now credited as some of the most important paleontological finds of the 20th century. Close to 160 fossil remains of early man including Homo Habilis and Homo Erectus were discovered, In the 1960’s and 1970’s placing man’s origins to three million years. To date some 4,000 fossil specimens of mammal and stone age artefacts have been discovered at Sibiloi area. These locations of can be visited.Four significant treasures are : the shell of a giant tortoise dating back 3 million years, a set of jaws over 5ft. long from a crocodile believed to have been over 45ft. in length and the extinct Behemoth, forebear of the elephant with massive tusks, both dating back 1.5 million years and the hominid (early man) finds.Sibiloi also boasts the rare Striped Hyena, leopard, lion, cheetah, and hippo, Grevy’s Zebra, Lesser Kudu and Grant’s Gazelle.Like the Tsavo East and West Sibiloi has a hot and dry climate and features include Koobi Fora museum , scenic mountainous wilderness landscape with three camp sites and two air strips. Ol Doinyo Sabuk National Park - 20 sq km This park is very close to the capital city, Nairobi, about 65 kms. It is an ideal place for a day trip. It has a warm climate hence very attractive to hikers and those that enjoy walking in beautiful surroundings. The mountain rises to some 8000ft over the 20 kms square area. It is recommended to approach the park via the spectacular Fourteen Falls. The game includes baboon, colobus, bushbuck, impala, and duiker, Black Rhinoceros, Leopard, Sykes Monkeys and Black-faced Vervets. The Park’s attraction is its beauty and views of Mounts Kenya and Kilimanjaro and at the start of the rains butterflies are noticeably abundant, including species of Swallowtails and Charaxes. The relatively rare Charaxes nandina is sometimes common at OL Donyo Sabuk. A Maasai name meaning ‘Big Mountain’. Today some two hundred and fifty buffalo roam the slopes. Kikuyu traditionalists call it Kea-Njahe, known as the ‘Mountain of the Big Rain’ one of the Ngai’s (God for kikuyu) lesser homeForest Birds are common and Species such as Ayers' Hawk Eagle, Great Sparrow Hawk, African Goshawk, Olive Pigeon, Lemon Dove, Emerald Cuckoo, and many other forest birds are common here The steep ascent of solitary mountain rears up to 2,145m from an otherwise flat area. Requires a 4WD vehicle. As you approach the summit laid the graves of Sir William Northrop McMillan (1872-1925) and his wife Lady Lucie. A Scot, raised in St. Louis, Missouri, U.S.A arrived in Kenya in 1901 for the big game shooting, playing host to Roosevelt during his famous 1911 safari at their ranch Juja Farm Mount Kenya National Park 715 sq km Mt. Kenya is East Africa’s second highest mountain at 5,199m high, it is referred to as home of the Ngai (God) by the Kikuyu, Kenya’s largest tribe. In traditional rituals Ngai is addressed as Mwene Nyaga (possessor of brightness), this name comes from Kere Nyaga, the Kikuyu name for Mt Kenya, the Mountain of brightness. Part of the mountain’s fascination is the variation in flora, including Giant Groundsel and Lobelia, as the altitude changes. Dry upland forest, the true montaine (mountain) dominate the lower slopes. The forest begins at 2,000m which is mainly cedar and podo. A dense belt of bamboo forest can be found at 2500m which merges into the upper forest of smaller trees, interspersed with glades. These forest belts play host to different animals and plants with at least 11 unique species. Here you can find the Black and White Colobus and Sykes Monkeys, Also there are, buffalo, and elephant. The park has one lodge with 66 beds) seven climbers huts of total 82 beds) and three self catering Banda sites with total 136 beds. On the outskirts of the Park there are three lodges having a total 456 beds) Alternate Hotel accommodation can be found in Nanyuki or Nyeri two historic towns very close to this Mountain region.
